The Driveway Calculator

One page, one engine, three area shapes, two independent gravel layers. Pick your shape โ€” rectangle, circle, or triangle โ€” choose your base material from the 7 well-graded options, your top material from the 7 decorative options, set depths, and the calculator applies compacted densities per ASTM D448 to give you cubic yards, US tons (or metric tonnes), bag counts, and material cost โ€” with 10% waste already on the total.

It is deliberately opinionated about density. The calculator uses compacted densities only โ€” a fundamental difference from every other gravel estimator that incorrectly uses loose density and understates your material needs by 10โ€“15%. Every formula is printed next to the results: Volume = Area ร— Depth รท 324, Weight = Volume ร— Compacted Density, Tonnage = Weight รท 2000. Every calculation is also encoded into the page URL, so the link you text to a partner reopens with your exact inputs loaded.

You get, per run

๐ŸงฎTwo-layer gravel estimator

Turn a driveway area into cubic yards, compacted tonnage, and bag counts โ€” with independent base and top layer selection.

Every wrong driveway purchase starts as an estimating error, so this is the layer the site invests in most. The flagship calculator accepts three area shapes (rectangle, circle, triangle), two independent gravel layers, and applies compacted densities per ASTM D448. Choose a base layer of ABC/CA6 at 4 inches and a top layer of #57 at 2 inches, and get separate volume and weight for each layer plus a combined total โ€” with 10% waste applied automatically.

The most critical choice on every estimate is which gravel goes where, and the calculator handles it natively. The Base Layer dropdown offers load-bearing materials (ABC, CA6, #4 crushed stone, recycled concrete, crushed limestone) that compact to a hard surface. The Top Layer dropdown offers decorative materials (#57, #8, pea gravel, river rock, DG, lava rock) that wear under tire contact. No mixing the two โ€” they are calculated separately and compacted separately, just like a professional installation.

Every gravel type carries its own compacted density: 140 lbs/ftยณ for ABC, 160 lbs/ftยณ for #57, 108 lbs/ftยณ for pea gravel, 95 lbs/ftยณ for river rock. These densities determine how many US tons your driveway actually weighs โ€” the number that matters to the dump truck driver and the aggregate yard. The calculator also shows metric tonnes, cubic meters, and bag counts (0.5 cu ft small, 1 cu ft medium, 0.5 cu yd bulk) for any delivery method.

โš–๏ธFive-material cost comparison

Compare gravel, asphalt, concrete, interlocking pavers, and stamped concrete side by side with installed cost ranges and expected lifespan.

Gravel is cheapest upfront at $1.25โ€“$4.50/sq ft installed, but costs more per year over 30 years than concrete because of regrading ($200โ€“$500 every 3โ€“5 years) and full top-up ($1.50โ€“$2.50/sq ft every 10โ€“15 years). The five-panel comparison shows all ranges at once โ€” low, mid, high install cost, and expected lifespan โ€” so you can annualize and see which material is actually cheap long-term.

Asphalt ($3.50โ€“$8.00/sq ft, 15โ€“30 year lifespan) is smooth, dark, and pliable in cold weather, but needs resealing every 3โ€“5 years ($0.50โ€“$1.00/sq ft). Concrete ($4.50โ€“$10.00/sq ft, 30โ€“50 year lifespan) is the longest-lasting material with minimal maintenance, but hard and cold in winter. Pavers ($6.00โ€“$15.00/sq ft, 25โ€“50+ years) have the highest curb appeal and zero maintenance, but the slowest installation. Stamped concrete ($7.00โ€“$18.00/sq ft, 25โ€“45 years) bridges the gap โ€” concrete patterned to look like stone or brick.

The comparison panel updates live as you change the driveway area. A 20ร—40 ft rectangular driveway (800 sq ft) shows gravel at $1,000โ€“$3,600 total, asphalt at $2,800โ€“$6,400, concrete at $3,600โ€“$8,000, pavers at $4,800โ€“$12,000, and stamped at $5,600โ€“$14,400. Same area, same assumptions, zero cherry-picking. Each material also shows its typical install depth โ€” 6 inches for gravel, 4 for asphalt, 5 for concrete, 7 for pavers โ€” so you can sanity-check against your quote.

โš™๏ธWorkflow & output tools

The unglamorous features that decide whether an estimate survives contact with a real dump truck and aggregate yard.

Estimates get used at aggregate yard counters, on property survey stakes, and in pickup truck beds โ€” not ideal lighting with a spreadsheet open. So the calculator keeps both unit systems live at once: switching Imperial to Metric converts every input and output in sync, including gravel densities (lbs/ftยณ โ†” kg/mยณ), volume (cu yd โ†” mยณ), weight (US tons โ†” metric tonnes), and price per unit.

Results can be saved to your browser's local storage for project files, reset in one click, or encoded into the page URL. A share link carries your exact inputs โ€” shape, dimensions, base material, base depth, top material, top depth, waste percentage โ€” so the same numbers reopen on any device, and nobody re-types a gravel density from memory. Saved results never leave your browser and you clear them with one click.

The calculator also reports every intermediate value: base volume and tonnage, top volume and tonnage, total volume and tonnage, bag counts, cost per layer, and the five-material comparison. This transparency is deliberate โ€” an estimate you can audit beats a number you have to trust. The formulas are printed next to the results they produce: Volume = Area ร— Depth รท 324, Weight = Volume ร— Compacted Density, Cost = Volume ร— Price per cu yd.

Verify with your local density: ABC and #57 densities are national averages. If your aggregate yard provides a specific density for their material (e.g., 138 lbs/ftยณ instead of 140), use the Custom Density option on the Base Layer dropdown for a more accurate tonnage figure.

Where the toolchain earns its keep

Six situations where guessing wrong costs real money โ€” and where the compacted-density formulas and two-layer system pay for themselves the first time you use them.

A freshly graveled driveway โ€” the endpoint of a correctly estimated project

๐Ÿ New two-car gravel driveway

Rectangle shape at 20ร—40 ft = 800 sq ft. 4 inches ABC base (9.87 cu yd, 18.65 tons) + 2 inches #57 top (4.95 cu yd, 10.69 tons). 10% waste = 16.31 cu yd, 32.2 total tons for one tandem-axle delivery.

๐Ÿ—๏ธContractor bid verification

A quoted $3,200 for 15 cu yd of gravel at $40/cu yd โ€” run the calculator: 800 sq ft, 6 inches total, ABC at $20 + #57 at $40 = $197.40 material cost. Is the $3,000+ install markup reasonable? Now you know where the number comes from.

๐ŸššRV driveway with geotextile

Large/RV preset at 20ร—100 ft = 2,000 sq ft. 6 inches ABC base (37.04 cu yd) + 2 inches DG top (18.52 cu yd) = 55.56 cu yd, 102.8 tons with waste. Geotextile = 2,000 sq ft at $1.00/sq ft = $2,000 added. Need tri-axle delivery or two tandem trips.

๐ŸŒฒSloped rural long driveway

12ร—100 ft rectangle + 30 ft circle turnaround + 10ร—12 ft triangle flare = 1,966.9 sq ft total. 15% waste (sloped) instead of 10%. 4 inches ABC + 2 inches pea gravel = 48.4 cu yd, 87.1 tons.

๐Ÿ’ฐMaterial selection budget

800 sq ft driveway. Gravel $1,000โ€“$3,600, asphalt $2,800โ€“$6,400, concrete $3,600โ€“$8,000, pavers $4,800โ€“$12,000. The five-panel comparison instantly shows whether the $2,600 asphalt premium is worth it over 30 years of less maintenance.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธOld driveway removal + replacement

Toggle 'Additional Work Costs' to include old asphalt removal ($1,200 at $1.50/sq ft), permit ($150), site prep ($500), grading ($400), drainage ($500). Your 'gravel driveway' total is now $1,000 + $3,750 extras = $4,750 โ€” the real project number.

How a run works, start to delivery

The toolchain is designed as one pass, not a quiz. Five steps, about two minutes.

  1. 1

    Pick a shape and size

Three area shapes โ€” rectangle, circle, triangle โ€” with common size presets (single-car, two-car, long driveway, RV) that auto-fill dimensions, or type your own.

  2. 2

    Choose two gravel layers

Base layer dropdown (ABC/CA6/Crushed Limestone/#4/Recycled Concrete) and Top layer dropdown (#57/#8/Pea Gravel/River Rock/DG). Each with its own compacted density from ASTM D448.

  3. 3

    Set depths and waste

Base layer depth: 4 inches standard, 6 for RV/clay soil. Top layer depth: 2 inches standard. Waste factor: 10% default, 15% for sloped, 20% for extra touch-up material.

  4. 4

    Review volumes, weights, and cost

Base volume and tonnage, top volume and tonnage, total with waste, bag counts, material cost per layer โ€” every intermediate number is there to audit.

  5. 5

    Compare all five materials

The comparison panel shows gravel, asphalt, concrete, pavers, and stamped concrete โ€” all installed cost side-by-side with low/mid/high ranges and expected lifespan.

Standalone calculator pages are on the way โ€” right now the full toolchain lives in the flagship calculator on the homepage, and everything below is queued for its own URL.

Tool questions, answered

Why two layers instead of one?+

One thick layer of mixed stone does not compact well โ€” the pea gravel on top cannot compact with fines from the base because the two materials are mixed together. You end up with a weak center that shifts under traffic. Professional installers always lay and compact the base layer first, then the top layer separately.

Which waste factor should I use?+

10% minimum โ€” covers compaction settling, spillage during spread, and supplier rounding to full cubic yards. 15% for sloped driveways and curves. 20% if you want extra stone for touch-ups and occasional thin spots. Even experienced landscapers use 8โ€“10% as a floor.

Is pea gravel a good base layer?+

No. Pea gravel has no fines โ€” it cannot compact into a hard surface by itself. Use pea gravel only as a top decorative layer on top of a proper well-graded base (ABC/CA6). A pea gravel driveway over soil will wash out in the first heavy rain.

How much does geotextile fabric cost?+

$0.50โ€“$1.50 per square foot installed. Non-woven is cheaper ($0.50โ€“$0.80/sq ft), woven is stronger ($1.00โ€“$1.50/sq ft). Mandatory on clay soil โ€” it doubles practical lifespan by stopping fines from mixing up into the base.

Do I really need to calculate tonnage?+

Yes โ€” tonnage determines both how many delivery trucks you need and how much your aggregate yard charges per trip. A single-axle truck holds 8 tons max, a tandem holds 10โ€“20, a tri-axle holds 20+. Overbuy truck capacity and you pay a premium; underbuy and you split into two trips at double the hauling fee.

Can I use my own gravel density?+

Yes โ€” select 'Custom Density' from either layer's dropdown and enter any lbs/ftยณ value. This is useful if your local yard provides a specific density test result, or if you are using an unusual material not in the standard 11-type list.
